Are you ready to start making photographs that stand out and uniquely articulate your personal artistic voice? This workshop builds on a prerequisite understanding of basic camera functions such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and is designed for the amateur photographer or artist to take their process to the next level. Through lecture, demonstration, and guided group practice, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences, ask questions, and get immediate feedback from the instructor and other students. This workshop will cover the advanced capabilities of your camera such as custom white balance, metering and focusing techniques, using on-camera flash, bracketing, as well as analysing histograms, making long exposures, and advanced approaches to composition. You will leave this workshop with the tools and knowledge necessary to elevate your photography skills beyond ‘basic’ and begin to capture the world as you truly see it.

Over 85% of every photograph taken this year will have been made with a smartphone. We use them to promote products and businesses, to capture candid personal moments, and for social media. With ever-increasing picture quality, tons of manual settings, and apps that can provide endless creative options, Smartphone photography has become a serious platform for advertisers and bloggers as well as a highly expressive tool. This Smartphone Photography workshop is a great fit for someone who relies on their cell phone photography for their business and wants to set their images apart, or for anyone looking to elevate their everyday shots. No previous knowledge of camera or phone functions is necessary. Topics explored include the various manual camera settings available on phones today, unique compositional approaches, working with available light and phone flash, and editing applications that can improve or customize the look of your images.

Just like other forms of print-making, inkjet printing is an artform with a wealth of techniques and outcomes. Learn how to print your own photographs and digital images like a professional so you can control how your files transform from pixel to print. In this 5-week crash course, we will cover printer functions and maintenance, how to make the right paper selection for your prints, file types, resolution, and file prep, soft proofing, and the final stages of printing, trimming, and archiving.

We will be using an Epson P800 for printing. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops if they have one, files on a usb drive, notebook, and pencil. Experience with Adobe Photoshop is helpful but not required.

Paper and ink costs are included in the registration fee. Each student will have the chance to print on luster and matte papers. If you own a specific paper that you would like to work with, feel free to bring it along.

It is a common misconception that film has become a medium of the past. Contemporary artists continue to find new ways to utilize the unique quality and aesthetic of photographic film, challenging the traditions and materiality of the photographic medium. We are so excited to be able to offer artists shooting with film the opportunity to output their work into print form. Whether you have archives of negatives from years ago or would like to learn how to digitize your film for current or future projects, this workshop will provide you with a professional workflow from start to finish. Each week we will cover a different process: how to use an Epson V850 Pro flatbed film scanner, control your scan files with Silverfast 8 software, edit files in Photoshop, and produce large format digital prints on our Epson P9000 inkjet printer. Some basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and general comfort with a Mac will be helpful but not required.

Please bring any negatives you wish to work with, a notebook, and pencil.

Are you struggling to figure out a direction for your photographic series? Stuck in a creative rut? The Photographic Practice is a five-week course designed to provide the supportive peer environment and constructive feedback that is so crucial to an artist’s process. With instructor-provided short exercises, in-depth group critiques, and lectures highlighting relevant artists, both historical and contemporary, students will gain new perspectives on their own photographic practice. This is an opportunity to really dig into what we do as artists and learn from others who share the experience of working their way through an idea. The class format is somewhat interdisciplinary (meaning you don’t have to exclusively work in traditional photographic formats) and open; leaving room for adjusting to the needs of the group, their projects, and specific questions that arise over the course of the class meetings. You will leave this course with the inspiration and additional insight, whether it be technical, conceptual, or logistical, needed to push your project(s) or portfolio to a new place.

Professional documentation can make all the difference when applying for jobs, grants, residencies, updating a website with new works, or presenting a portfolio. Some ephemeral artworks or installations exist only as images, making their careful digital conservation even more crucial. Over the course of two days, we will cover proper set up, lighting (available and strobe), camera capture, and editing techniques for achieving professional quality documentation of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks in a variety of settings. Class duration: 4 hours

Letterpress is a form of printing text that has been widely used from the time of its invention in the 15th century until the second half of the 20th century. While industrial letterpress processes have been replaced by offset printers, the medium offers artists and designers a wealth of creative options for making posters, books, zines, prints, and ephemera that speak to the contemporary moment.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of letterpress printing and produce your own hand-set small edition of prints. Participants will practice setting moveable type from our wood and lead type collections, collaboratively build a forme on the press bed, and operate a Vandercook 4T press from inking up to clean up. This course is a prerequisite to the Advanced Letterpress courses we will be offering in the near future and is also a great introduction for Artist Members who are looking to get into the studio and work in letterpress.

All materials will be provided. We suggest bringing a notebook and pencil for note-taking.

Workshop duration: 3 hours

Learn how to screen print your own t-shirts, bags, bandanas and more using an affordable DIY setup! This workshop is designed for beginners and will teach you how to set up, register, and print on clothing, accessories, and fabric with minimal equipment and tools. Participants will learn the best tips and tricks for printing on a variety of fabrics and forms and be empowered to create their own custom pieces at home.

Instructor and Co-founder of CPAC, Shawn Smith, will be sharing his 18 years of screen printing experience in both the commercial and fine art fields. Smith’s work encompasses serigraphy, aquatint, and mezzotint. He has worked as an assistant to Master Printer, Art Werger, and has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally in group shows including the 8th International Printmaking Biennial of Douro in Portugal, 24th Annual International Small Print Show in Chicago, Illinois, New York Society of Etchers 3rd National Exhibition of Intaglio Prints, and the Los Angeles Printmaking Society Members National Juried Exhibition where he was awarded the LA Printmaking Society Foundation Award.

Participants should bring up to ten items for printing. Approved items include clothing and fabric pieces. Items that can be pressed flat for printing will have the best chance of printing well (i.e. not baseball caps, for example). Workshop Duration: 4 hours

Etching, or Intaglio, is a term for printmaking processes that involve either etching or engraving lines into a metal plate. These incised lines hold ink, while the raised areas of the metal plate do not, allowing for the line image to be wiped with ink and sent through the press to produce multiple identical prints on paper.

Introduction to Etching is a one-day crash course in this historical process. Students will learn multiple techniques for inscribing their own artwork onto a provided copper plate, chemically process and prepare the plate, and learn how to work with an etching press to achieve even pressure and produce a consistent edition of prints. 

All materials will be provided, but we suggest bringing a notebook, pencil, and any source images you would like to use.

Workshop duration: 3 hours

Screen printing is a widely-used process where ink is pressed through a stenciled silk mesh screen using a squeegee to impress an image onto material, most commonly paper, fabric, or clothing. Think Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe prints! An edition, or multiple identical prints, can be produced with little cost and equipment and is still applicable to fine art, diy, and production industries today. This workshop is a fun and easy way to get introduced to the printmaking medium and quickly output your artwork onto a variety of surfaces. Students will draw their own artwork on acetate transparencies, coat and expose their screen, and learn the basic techniques and tricks to creating a consistent edition of prints.

All materials will be provided, but we suggest bringing a notebook and pencil for taking notes. You’re also welcome to bring your sketchbook and/or any source images you would like to use to draw from.
