Workshop Duration: 2 days

Relief is the oldest printmaking technique in the world, with the earliest surviving example of a woodblock print found in China dating from 200 CE. While materials and tools have evolved, the general technique of carving away negative space to create a raised image has remained the same. Stationary, posters, custom patterned fabric, and fine art prints are a few examples of relief printing applications still done today. In this two-day workshop students will learn the basics of relief carving and printing using polystyrene blocks and traditional relief gouges. Students will see examples of various techniques from contemporary artists, experiment with carving and inking a block, and create a limited edition of prints on a relief press.

All materials will be provided, but we suggest bringing a notebook, pencil, and any source images you would like to use.

Printmaking is a fun and messy business. Please dress appropriately.
